Happy Veterans Day to My Hubby, et al

russell a ford usmc may 25 1968 May 25, 1968, Camp Lejeune, NC

My husband’s military service is a special part of his personal history, and as such, an important part of our family history. We were married in 1965, during the height of the Viet Nam War. He graduated from college in May of 1967, and having passed the qualifying test the previous winter, had been sworn in as an Officer Candidate in the United States Marines. He was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the spring of 1968, and after Officer Candidate School and The Basic School, followed by Supply School, he spent a 13-month tour of duty in Viet Nam. While in country, he was promoted to 1st LT. He was honorably discharged as a Captain, USMC.

My pride in his service to our country is only exceeded by my pride in his service to our Lord. But, stronger than either of those sources of pride, and foundational to both, is my pride in who he is. He served because he wanted to serve, because it was an honor to fulfill his patriotic duty.

One day I may write a book. For today, as we celebrate Veterans Day, I’ll just post a few pictures from the “olden days” – the days when military personnel and their loved ones could not even communicate by telephone, much less web cams, Skype, email, chat, etc. We communicated only by letter (real letters) for 10 months. Then we met in Hawaii for R&R. Then another three months of letters-only, before his return home. Yeah, THOSE “olden days.”

Scrapbook 2-page Layout: Conner’s Choir

Concert Layout Left

Left Page of Layout

Concert Layout Right

Right Page of Layout

It’s so much easier to post pictures of digital pages. But, my scrapbooking is almost all traditional, so I’m posting one of my recent layouts. Actually, there are two 2-page layouts from this event. These are the last two pages. I used background cardstock from DCWV Performance stack. The die cuts and title are cut with Cricut Quarter Note.

Recently one of my good croppin’ friends, Kathy at kropinkat.com, told me about a new product, Tim Holtz Tissue Tape. I used it on the large note on the right page. I made a collage on grungeboard with Tim Holtz Tissue Tape, inked it with Ranger Tea Dye, then cut the note with the Cricut. As I anticipated, the blade wanted to hang up on some of the strips of tape, but did not create enough of a problem to be a deal-breaker. Next time, though, I’ll do the cut first, then make the collage on top of it and trim the excess. Here’s a close-up of that element:

Autumn at My Place

A week ago I took my new Canon Rebel T3i camera out and about our place to attempt to capture the beauty. The large photo is of a tree that I can almost touch from our upper deck. I love the fall!

SonSurf Beach Bash VBS

Our church is a "church plant," first launched to the public in September 2002. For some of our years, we have been "mobile," meeting in school buildings. We do have our own leased building now. Last year I directed our very first VBS, with 50 children and 25 workers. This was our second year, with 71 children and 30 workers. It was awesome!! Thursday is the special day where we emphasize why Jesus came to earth, died on the cross, and rose again. Our pastor (my son) shares what the Bible has to say and then gives the children the opportunity to speak with him (and me) individually, if they want to know more about becoming a child of God. As a result, ten children gave their hearts to Jesus. The entire week was an incredible blessing--and SO MUCH FUN!!

Siblings and Friends

It's just very special when your siblings are also your best friends, and that is the case with my brother Keith, my sister Janene, and myself. The older we get, the more we treasure our times together
